Safari is a great browser and performs really well on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Having said that the number of features available on the stock version are really less and I wished there were more from Apple. But then if your Apple device is jailbroken you can install some tweaks that can enhance the stock Safari browser and add some new features, however, the already existing tweaks do not offer a complete set of features for Safari.

Recently, a new tweak named Canopy has been added to Cydia that comes with a bunch of really useful features for mobile Safari. To name some you will get improved search functionality, ability to reopen accidently closed tabs, paste & search feature, and delete individual past searches. That’s not all as there are a number of other small features that make the stock Safari browser one of the best for iOS.

Canopy For Safari: An Overview

Before I start talking about Canopy I would like to tell you that it is not a free tweak and can be purchased for $0.99 from Cydia store. Let us no get started with the main features of the app.

The first one I would like to talk about is the ability to access Safari settings from the tab switcher. When you tap on the Safari tab switcher button, you will see two new buttons at the bottom where the right one is to access the stock Safari settings page. Pressing the left button will allow you to close all the tabs at once, bookmark the current tab and add the current page to reading list. To open a new tab you can simply long press the Tabs button and Canopy will animate open a tab for you instantly.

Similarly if you long press the bookmarks button inside Safari, the page will immediately be bookmarked for you. To recover an accidently closed tab on mobile Safari, you need to hit tabs to open the active tabs and then Long-Press the New Page button. This will open a list of tabs closed by you during the current browsing session.

Talking about the inbuilt search function, Canopy enhances the very feature with a couple of options which are remarkable. Now when you tap on the Search area, the list of recently searched keywords get a arrow button next to them. If you tap on that the very string will be added immediately to the search bar and you will be able to edit/add it further. On the stock Safari, tapping on the search string opens it up on Google immediately, whereas here you will be able to edit it further. To access your browser history all you have to do is long press the back button and the list will open up for you.

There is also a settings page for Canopy inside stock Settings app. From there you can further customize it like disabling in Safari settings button, and choose the action Canopy does when long-pressing the Bookmarks and Tabs button.

The tweak is one of my favorites and I love the way it performs on my iPhone. The list of options I get for that price is really amazing and there is no reason why one should not buy it. So go ahead and try this lovely tweak.
