If you love watching videos on the native or official Youtube application and also download videos from the same, you must be knowing a couple of Cydia tweaks to get your job done. However, in certain situations we come across some interesting videos on the Twitter, Facebook or other third party applications, which can be played from the very screen but cannot be downloaded instantly

To download these videos you will need to open them in the official Youtube app first. That could lead to a lot on inconvenience at times and one of the Cydia tweak developers has addressed this problem in a very unique way.

Universal Video Downloader is a new tweak being hosted by BigBoss repo which lets you download videos literally from any stock or third party application installed on your iPhone or iPad. The list of app includes the native Youtube app, the official Youtube app (if you are on iOS 6), Facebook, Twitter, Safari, and so on. So the tweak really lives upto its name and does what it says.

It can be downloaded for free from Cydia store and once you do so, a new icon is added to the home screen. Before you can use the application you need to open the tweak from the home screen and accept the end user license agreement.

When you open the application, the interface will be presented with five tabs at the bottom: Videos, Downloads, Apps, Settings and Help. Now you must open Apps tab and use the toggle to enable the tweak for ALL the apps. If you wish to download videos from selected apps only, switch off the Enable All Apps toggle and a list of all the installed applications will appear. Now using the corresponding toggles you can enable the tweak for desired applications only.

From under Settings you can switch on or off Full Quality Videos, Resume Videos, Download Alerts etc. If you want some help regarding the procedure that needs to be followed in order to download videos, head to the Help tab. From the Downloads tab you can keep an eye on the progress of the videos being downloaded while the Videos tab contains all the videos that are present on the device.

How The Tweak Works?

To download a video, irrespective of the app you are running, just play the video and immediately a pop up will appear asking for the download confirmation. On tapping Download, the app will will ask for a Title for the video after which it will commence the download.

If a video has finished streaming, you can even download the same without an internet connection. The app further supports pause and resume functions when downloading videos.

Note: Although the app can download videos from almost any apps, there are two major exceptions. Firstly it is unable to download files specified in QuickTime reference movies. Secondly it cannot download videos from third party apps which use custom video players or custom verification systems to restrict accessibility of video content.

Having said that, the app will still download most of the videos that you come across.

From my personal experience the app works brilliantly and downloads almost every video but what I didn’t like is that it cannot run in the background for more than 10 minutes. So if the video is big and will take more than 10 minutes to download it is recommended that you leave the app open or disable the auto lock feature as after 10 minutes the download will be terminated.

Rest is all great about the app and the fact that it is free makes it an even worthy tweak to try.
