Windows Phone 8 Lock & Start Screen On Your Android: LauncherWP8

The list of launchers for Android OS do not seem to have an end and what I really like about them is that they replace the home and lock screen with their own refreshing and unique interfaces.

Some of the popular names in the list are Go Launcher and ADW launcher which in addition to boasting a unique interface, also come in plenty of great themes. So basically you have numerous launchers to try and give your Android device a new feel each time.

A while back I reviewed the BIG Launcher and today I have another interesting launcher called as LauncherWP8. This new launcher adds the Windows Phone 8 Modern UI, lock screen and home screen to your Android device. It is a next to perfect replication of the Windows Phone 8 UI and offers lots of customization options.

Be it the overall theme, the number, title, placement & layout of tiles or the associated app shortcuts & widget, the launcher gives you complete control over these. It comes with a search tool for apps and a Windows Phone like app drawer where the apps are displayed in a list in alphabetical order. Further, you can customize the lockscreen by changing, its layout, backgroud image and even the font color.

Once you install it and set it as the default launcher, the whole new interface will immediately be applied to your device and you can now start making customizations as per your requirement and liking.

To change a particular tile or make changes to the complete layout, long press on any of the these tiles and you will enter the edit mode. Now you can reposition or unpin (remove) a tile from the home screen. To make changes to a particular tile as in giving a new title, change text color, background, icon or style, you can long press that particular tile and when it gets highlighted, tap on the circular edit button appearing on the top left corner.

To open the app drawer or the list of installed applications, swipe the screen towards left (move you finger from right to left). If you want to place a shortcut of an app from list to the home screen, long press it and then select Pin to Start Screen. Also you can uninstall any app right from the app drawer and you will not have to go to the Manage Applications section to do so.

What is really unique about the launcher is that it lets you place third party app widgets on the start screen ( home screen ) in the form of tiles. Also you have a variety of icon sizes ranging from 1x1 to 4x2.

What is a little disappointing is the performance of the launcher. There is a lag most of the times and the transitions are not as smooth as on a real Windows Phone. But then considering the fact it is available for FREE makes it a must app.

NOTE: The app is originally in Chinese and the version available on the Google Play store is the same one. However, one of the developers on XDA has managed to change the language to English for majority of the app sections,.
